Adding even more depth to this announcement, new research in October 2025 revealed how Sigiriya’s 2,000-year-old water system truly works, solving a centuries-old mystery. Archaeologists confirmed that the moat and fountains are part of an intricate hydraulic network: when the moat fills during the rainy season, it channels water through hidden conduits to power Sigiriya’s ornate fountains. Some still function today, a remarkable testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering.
These findings remind us that sustainability isn’t new; it’s been part of Sri Lanka’s story for millennia. Sigiriya’s creators mastered resource efficiency long before it became a global goal.
